About St Paul's Church
St Paul’s Church serves the Church of England parish of Rusthall, within Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Set near Rusthall Common, it continues in use as the local parish church. The building has held Grade II protection since 1974, in recognition of its architectural character and surviving early fittings, including the font. The adjacent war memorial and the wall beneath it are separately protected at the same grade.
The church dates from 1849 and was commissioned by William Nevill, fourth Earl of Abergavenny, for the Nevill Park Estate. Henry Isaac Stevens produced the design, assisted by the unrelated local architect N. E. Stevens, while Henry Hardinge provided the funding. Local sandstone was used for its cross-shaped, Gothic Revival form, which draws on Early English architecture. A square-ended tower incorporates the bells. Enlargement in 1865 provided another aisle and further pews, with pointed openings connecting the addition to the nave. A porch-like narthex was built at the west end in 1913, and Rusthall’s First World War memorial was placed outside in 1922.
