About St Thomas the Apostle, Harty

St Thomas the Apostle, Harty is a Church of England parish church on Harty Ferry Road, Harty, on Kent’s Isle of Sheppey. It belongs to the Diocese of Canterbury and the Sittingbourne deanery and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Its origins are uncertain, although the listed fabric is assigned to the late eleventh or early twelfth century. Evidence of earlier Saxon masonry has been discovered, while tufa around a north-wall window suggests work no later than the eleventh century. A north aisle was added after 1200, followed by enlargement of the chancel and construction of the north porch. Fourteenth-century additions included the vestry, Lady Chapel, buttresses and probably the surviving rood screen. An oak chest from that century bears a carved jousting scene. Victorian work replaced the nave roof, and the west end was repaired after wartime bomb damage. The church has one bell and is lit by paraffin lamps, having neither electricity nor piped water.
