About Our Lady of Gillingham Church

Our Lady of Gillingham Church serves as a Roman Catholic parish in Gillingham, Kent. The church occupies a central position where Ingram Road meets Railway Street, to the north of the town’s rail depot. Regular worship includes Mass each day, with one Saturday evening service and two on Sunday mornings.

Gillingham’s Catholic mission dates from 1888, when Father Thomas McMahon came to the town with backing from the Arathoon family. The Fauld family funded an early building shared by the congregation and a school, completed in 1893 and subsequently called McMahon Hall. Today’s Gothic Revival church was inaugurated in 1896, then enlarged six years later. Louis Brennan donated its high altar and reredos, both produced by a Belgian artisan. Further work in 1990 introduced a narthex, and the two parish halls underwent refurbishment from 1999 to 2003. Funerals for three young victims of the 1951 Gillingham bus disaster took place here.
