About St Michael the Archangel Church, Chatham

St Michael the Archangel Church, Chatham, is a functioning Roman Catholic parish church in the Kent town. The building occupies Hill’s Terrace, beside the railway station, with Rochester Street and Maidstone Road nearby. Clergy based here also minister at Sacred Heart in Luton and St Paulinus in Brompton.

Designed by Henry Clutton, the church was erected during 1862 and 1863 in a revived Romanesque manner, with projected expenditure of £1,695. It replaced the earlier base of Medway’s Catholic mission, established at Brompton in 1795, and initially provided the area’s sole Catholic church. Yellow brick covers the exterior. Inside, rounded archways separate the main nave from shorter aisles, all contained beneath a shared roof. Catholic troops from the local garrison donated the pulpit in 1881. Frederick Walters and Son planned the 1935 enlargement, which lengthened the sanctuary and introduced chapels at either side. Consecration followed on 6 June 1951.
