About St Augustine's Church, Brookland

St Augustine’s Church, Brookland is a Church of England place of worship in Brookland, a Kent village within Walland Marsh. It honours Augustine, who became Canterbury’s earliest archbishop, and has Grade I listed protection.

The present building was constructed around 1250 on raised ground formed to reduce the threat from floods. A freestanding wooden belfry beside the northern porch is its most unusual feature. First made as an uncovered four-sided frame, it gained timber cladding, an eight-sided shape, a reinforced bell chamber and a steep cap during the fifteenth century. Its exterior was renewed in 1936 and 1990. The six bells include an example made around 1450. Notable fittings include box pews from about 1738 and a circular lead font bearing zodiac symbols and scenes of monthly rural tasks. A fragmentary medieval wall painting represents Thomas Becket’s killing.
