About Church of St Martin, Acrise

The Church of St Martin, Acrise, is an Anglican place of worship in the Kent village of Acrise, serving its surrounding parish. Originating in the Norman period and traditionally dated to about 1050, the church has been protected at Grade I since 1966.

Its earliest surviving fabric includes the nave and the older, lower part of the chancel, built with bands of flint cobbles and ironstone accented by Caen stone. The west entrance belongs to the 1200s, while the chancel was enlarged around 1300 and repaired during the Victorian period. Eighteenth-century changes brought broad arched windows and a porch patterned in contrasting brick. Interior details include crown-post roof structures, a substantial western gallery, gilded arms of William and Mary, and a manorial pew. Stained glass was made by Powell in 1855 and by Heaton, Butler and Bayne in 1897. Memorials include brasses and tablets for Mary Heyman, the Papillon family and William Turner.
