About St. James' Church, Yarmouth

St. James' Church, Yarmouth is a Church of England parish church on Saint James' Street in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. It remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Its origins are medieval, although very little survives from that period. Tradition holds that an earlier building elsewhere in Yarmouth was destroyed during a French attack in 1377, while a later church on the present site fell into ruin in 1543. Extensive work followed in the early seventeenth century, with reconsecration in 1626 and further rebuilding beginning in 1635. The building has a central nave flanked by two aisles, together with a chancel and tower at the west end. The chancel was extended by 12 feet in 1889. A southern mortuary chapel contains a statue commemorating Admiral Sir Robert Holmes and several Holmes family memorials. Other features include seventeenth-century grave slabs, a royal emblem dated 1715 and an organ made by Henry Speechly & Son.
