About St Mary and St Rhadegund
St Mary and St Rhadegund is an active Anglican parish church at Kemming Road, Ventnor, serving Whitwell on the Isle of Wight. Set above the village towards its southern edge and beside the rectory, the church is designated a Grade II* listed building.
The fabric is medieval, with surviving elements originating in the 1100s, 1200s, 1400s and 1500s, as well as later work. It evolved from a pair of chapels associated with separate manors. The layout comprises a nave with a three-arched south aisle, a chancel accompanied by another aisle, a tower at the western end and a southern porch. The original aisleless structure had a slender chancel; an aisle was created on its south side in the 13th century, then broadened in the 16th. John Warner and Sons cast the bells in 1889, and Whitechapel Bell Foundry refurbished them in 2009. Bevington made the pipe organ in 1860; Harrison and Harrison enlarged and renovated it in 1899.
