About Old West Kirk
Old West Kirk stands on the Esplanade at Greenock in Inverclyde. Formerly a Church of Scotland place of worship, it joined two other congregations to form Lyle Kirk in 2011. The Category A listed property was sold in 2022 and remains in community use.
Its origins lie in a royal charter granted in 1589, with worship beginning there in 1591. It was the earliest Presbyterian kirk erected in post-Reformation Scotland and the first to receive parliamentary approval. Additional side arms gave the building a cross-shaped layout, while galleries and extensions later provided more room. Following closure in 1841, it deteriorated until a substantial renovation directed by James Salmon brought it back into use in 1864 and introduced the tower. Its notable glazing includes a significant assembly of Pre-Raphaelite windows. Expansion of nearby shipbuilding prompted relocation, and the reconstructed church welcomed its congregation at the present site in 1928.
