About Thurso, Wilson Lane, Old St Peter's Church And Burial-ground
Thurso, Wilson Lane, Old St Peter's Church and Burial-ground is a ruined former parish church in Thurso, Highland. Standing near the seafront on the western bank of the River Thurso, it is dedicated to Saint Peter and surrounded by a walled burial ground. The church has been protected as a scheduled monument since 1929.
Its origins can be traced to at least 1125, and it was once Caithness’s chief church under the authority of the county’s bishops. The cross-shaped building follows the pointed architectural style and was constructed from locally sourced rubble. Now without a roof, it formerly contained a session room that was also used by Thurso’s sheriff and magistrates as a courtroom and prison. A steeple with a public clock stood above a dungeon. The church ceased regular use in 1832, when a new parish church designed by William Burn replaced it.
