About Snizort Cathedral
Snizort Cathedral is a former cathedral near Portree in Highland, Scotland. Its surviving remains stand on St Columba’s Isle, a small island in the River Snizort close to Loch Snizort on Skye. Also known as St Columba’s Church and Skeabost, the site is now protected as a scheduled monument.
Founded in 1079 under the authority of the Norwegian Archbishop of Nidaros, the church traditionally occupied a place where Columba had preached. The location may previously have served as a Pictish religious centre and could already have become Christian before his arrival. As Kilmuir monastery declined, the cathedral grew in significance. By the 14th century it was described as the leading church of the Isles and served as the main base of the Bishops of the Isles before that role passed to Iona Abbey. It remained standing in 1501 but was later destroyed during the Scottish Reformation. Among its bishops was Wimund, who became a maritime warlord after 1147.
