About Immaculate Conception Parish Church, Stratherrick
Immaculate Conception Parish Church, Stratherrick is a Roman Catholic place of worship at Dalcrag in Whitebridge, near Drumnadrochit in the Highland council area. The congregation remains active under Aberdeen’s Catholic diocese and is ministered to from St Mary’s in Inverness. It belongs to the Loch Ness Catholic Parishes group. Within the grounds is a pilgrimage site dedicated to Our Lady of the Highlands, including an open-air Mass stone blessed by Bishop Hugh Gilbert during March 2017.
Designed by the architectural practice Ross and Joass, the church dates from 1859 and was erected in the period after Catholic emancipation. A marble altar originating at St Mary’s, Nairn, eventually took the place of its earlier timber altar. Before a purpose-built church was available, Mass according to the Tridentine rite took place in a Dalcrag home. The officiating priest travelled from Glenmoriston and crossed Loch Ness in a rowing boat. Saint Mary MacKillop came here on 12 and 13 December 1873.
