About Saint Mary the Virgin

Saint Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church on Church Street in Ware, Hertfordshire. Dating principally from the 13th century, it remains the town’s parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

A place of worship has occupied the site since at least the Norman period, with records from the time of William the Conqueror indicating both a church and priest in Ware. The chancel is the earliest surviving section of the present flint-faced building and once served local residents alongside the nearby Benedictine community. During the 1390s, aisles and clerestories were added. Corbels depict Joan of Kent, her emblems and those of her husbands, while an octagonal font carved with saints also belongs to this period. The south porch includes a representation of Richard II. A short spire in the distinctive Hertfordshire style crowns the tower, and George Godwin directed restoration work during the 19th century.
