St Alban & Stephen Catholic Church stands on Beaconsfield Road in the centre of St Albans, close to the city’s railway station. This Roman Catholic parish is served by the Diocese of Westminster, which took over its care in 2019 after many years under the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.
Completed in 1905 after work began in 1903, the present building followed two previous schemes intended to provide local Catholics with a permanent place of worship. Architect John Kelly of Kelly & Birchall gave it an Italianate design, while St Albans contractors Christopher Miskin & Sons undertook construction. Extensive alterations during 1965–67 raised seating capacity from 400 to 600. They lengthened the nave and added aisles, a tower for the bell, a gallery for singers and a roomier entrance area. A new, enlarged sanctuary included chapels at either side. The former school behind the building gave way to a sacristy and parish hall, and consecration followed in May 1977.
