About St Peter's Church, Roydon

St Peter’s Church, Roydon is an active Church of England parish church in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. Dating from the 13th century, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building and continues to serve its parish.

Analysis of the medieval roof timbers places construction of the rectangular nave between 1225 and 1240. A north aisle was added around 1380 as the village population increased, and its windows retain small fragments of medieval glass, although most were substantially restored. The chancel is divided from the nave by a largely original timber rood screen, distinguished by a quatrefoil opening. Evidence of the former rood loft includes the surviving fixing point for its cross and a concealed staircase discovered during work on the Colte Chapel. The original stone font stands beside the north door and is carved with four heads representing the Evangelists; related medieval carvings appear outside the south entrance.
