About St Etheldreda's Church

St Etheldreda’s Church, at 1 Fore Street, is the Church of England parish church for Old Hatfield in Hertfordshire. It occupies a hilltop site beside the historic village, near Hatfield House and to the east of present-day Hatfield. Still serving as a parish church, the building is designated Grade I for its special architectural and historic importance.

The present church dates largely from the medieval period, beginning in about 1250, although the site may have supported Christian worship during Saxon times. Flint is the principal building material, and the layout follows a cross form with a tower at its western end. Further work continued into the fifteenth century, while Victorian alterations included repairs to the decorative stone patterns of the windows. Beside the chancel are the Salisbury and Brocket chapels. The former holds Cecil family burials, among them Robert Cecil’s richly detailed tomb. An effigy of an armed knight dates from roughly 1160. Eight tower bells were configured as a musical carillon in 1786, with tunes varying by weekday.
