About Benson Memorial Church
Benson Memorial Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, dedicated to St Richard of Chichester. It remains in parish use, sharing its priest with the Catholic communities at Puckeridge and Old Hall Green. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural and historic significance.
Arthur Young designed the Gothic-style church, which was built in 1914 and opened in January 1915. Its name commemorates the priest and writer Robert Hugh Benson, who lived at nearby Hare Street House, contributed towards the cost and placed the foundation stone. He died before construction was finished. A Lady chapel followed in 1916, with a porch added in 1934. In 1939, a 45-foot tower topped by a 35-foot copper spire completed the principal additions. Edward Myers, an auxiliary bishop of Westminster, consecrated the building in 1940.
