About Parish Church of Saint Peter
The Parish Church of Saint Peter is a Church of England church on Berkhamsted High Street in Hertfordshire. It remains the town’s principal active parish church and is protected at Grade II*.
Its earliest surviving fabric dates from around 1200, although the first recorded rector was appointed in 1222. The architecture reflects at least five periods, with substantial work from the 14th and 15th centuries. Extensive Victorian alterations included restoration under William Butterfield. Among the building’s most prominent features is its clock tower, which rises 85 feet. One of Hertfordshire’s largest churches, it also has historical links with Berkhamsted Castle and the Crown. Former worshippers included poet William Cowper and John Incent, later Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral. Brass memorials commemorate members of the Incent family.
