About St Michael and All Angels
St Michael and All Angels is a Church of England church on Church Lane in Ledbury, Herefordshire. Its oldest surviving fabric dates to around 1150, and the building is protected at Grade I, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic importance.
The western entrance and chancel retain twelfth-century work, while the north aisle was added in the thirteenth century and the south aisle in the fourteenth. A detached tower, begun around 1230, may stand apart because a stream beneath the church made other foundations unsuitable. Its upper stage, battlements and octagonal stone spire were completed in 1732. Nineteenth-century restoration brought new pews and stained glass. Inside are several notable monuments, a three-manual organ incorporating parts of an 1820 instrument, and a sixteenth-century Last Supper painting associated with Venetian artists including Titian. The tower holds ten bells, the oldest cast in 1705.
