Winchester Cathedral stands in Cathedral Close, Winchester, and serves as the Church of England cathedral for the Diocese of Winchester. It is the bishop’s principal church and is administered by the dean and chapter. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Saints Peter and Paul, and Saint Swithun, the cathedral is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Christian use of the site reaches back to about 648, when King Cenwalh established the Old Minster nearby. Construction of the present cathedral began under Bishop Walkelin in 1079, with its eastern section consecrated in 1093. Norman work survives prominently in the transepts and central tower. Later additions include an Early English retroquire, while the long, broad nave was remodelled in the Perpendicular Gothic style. A new west front, including its large window, was begun in 1346, and building continued until 1532. Measuring approximately 170 metres, it exceeds every other medieval cathedral in length.
