About Saint Peter's

Saint Peter's is a Church of England parish church in Petersfield, Hampshire, and belongs to the Diocese of Portsmouth. Standing on the southern side of The Square in the town centre, it remains an active place of parish worship. Dating from around 1150, the church is protected as a Grade I listed building.

The church began as a Norman chapel serving the manor of West Mapledurham and became an independent parish in 1886. Aisles were constructed in the late 1100s, while the tower was heightened in the 14th century and later given a battlemented upper stage. Sir Arthur Blomfield directed substantial restoration in 1873, and further work was completed in 1999. Notable survivals include a 15th-century font, a 13th-century piscina and parts of the original round-headed nave arcades. The tower contains eight bells used for change ringing, including one cast in 1750, and the present pipe organ dates from 1992.
