About St. Mary's Church
St. Mary’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Hayling Island in Hampshire. Grade II* listed, it became the island’s principal church after flooding destroyed the priory church and much of the southern shoreline during the 13th or 14th century.
The church was built chiefly in the early 13th century using stone brought from elsewhere. A wooden porch was added in the 15th century, while substantial changes and restoration were carried out inside during the later 19th century. Four sundials remain carved into the exterior walls. Notable interior features include Herbert Bryans’s Tree of Jesse stained glass, a Saxon stone basin decorated with interlaced designs, and a simpler square Norman font. A reordering in 2010 replaced Victorian pews with chairs, repaired damaged pillar bases and introduced a digital organ in place of the vandalised pipe organ. The churchyard contains an ancient yew with a circumference of about nine metres.
