About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an Anglican place of worship at Ashley in Hampshire, close to where Gains Castle once stood and roughly four miles south-east of Stockbridge. It holds Grade II* status and has been maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust since it ceased regular use in 1976.
Built in the early twelfth century, it was enlarged when the chancel was lengthened before that century ended. The compact structure has a nave, chancel and porch on the south side. Its fabric is mainly rubble flint, with dressed stone, tiled roofing and rendered wall surfaces; the brick porch was erected in 1701. Surviving details include Norman lancets, medieval windows, two bells housed within openings at the west end and a Purbeck marble font from the Norman period. A painted figure from the thirteenth century remains beside a chancel window. Other furnishings include an alms chest cut from a tree trunk and a pair of eighteenth-century memorials. Restoration campaigns were undertaken in 1858 and 1895.
