About Eglwys Cwyfan
Eglwys Cwyfan is a medieval Church of England church at Aberffraw on Anglesey, Wales. It occupies Cribinau, an islet reached across a causeway when tides permit, and is often called the Little Church in the Sea. Protected as a Grade II* listed building, the church remains in use, including for weddings and baptisms.
The church originated in the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Kevin, founder of the monastic community at Glendalough in Ireland. Coastal erosion gradually separated Cribinau from the peninsula where the building once stood. By the late 1800s, waves threatened the surrounding graves, while the roofless church had deteriorated and been replaced by a building inland at Llangwyfan. In 1893, local architect Harold Hughes raised funds for its restoration and for a protective sea wall around the island.
