About Capel Peniel

Capel Peniel is a former Calvinistic Methodist place of worship at Tremadog, close to Porthmadog in Gwynedd. Congregational use ended in 2010 as numbers fell and upkeep became increasingly costly. The Grade I listed building has since taken on a new role as a hall for the local community. Its early Neoclassical character helped shape later Welsh chapel architecture.

Construction of the main block took place during 1808 and 1809, under the patronage of William Madocks, who may also have prepared the design. Insufficient money meant that its columned porch was not added until 1849. The exterior combines painted rough masonry with a roof clad in Welsh slate. At the front, a pair of plain Tuscan pillars carries a triangular gable containing a small circular opening. Surviving Victorian elements inside include galleries along the sides, individually numbered enclosed seating and a centrally positioned preaching desk. Following deterioration, conservation work on the porch and roof was finished in 2020.
