About St Beuno's Church
St Beuno’s Church lies beyond Pistyll to the north-east, close to the Llŷn Peninsula’s northern shoreline. Named for the seventh-century Welsh holy man Beuno, it belongs to the Church of England and the Bangor diocese. Worship continues on an occasional basis, and the building has Grade I protection.
The church has twelfth-century origins, although extensive work in subsequent periods, especially the 1400s, shaped much of what survives. Pilgrims once passed it while travelling towards the abbey on Bardsey Island. Its compact interior combines the nave and chancel, while a bellcote rises above the roof. Local rhyolite stone forms the rubble walls. A notable font dating from the eleventh century bears a two-strand interlaced pattern influenced by Anglo-Scandinavian design. Weathered remnants of Welsh scriptural passages and a depiction of Saint Christopher remain on the walls. An old custom also continues, with rushes and aromatic plants spread across the floor at Christmas, Easter and in August.
