About St Twrog's Church

St Twrog’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Maentwrog, Gwynedd, set in the Vale of Ffestiniog within Snowdonia National Park. It belongs to the Deanery of Ardudwy and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Saint Twrog founded a church on this site during the sixth century. The building that preceded the present church was reconstructed on earlier foundations in 1814 as a rectangular stone structure with a square, battlemented tower. In 1896, architect John Douglas oversaw extensive work, adding a chancel and baptistery, installing stained glass and designing the lychgate. The west window honours Edmwnd Prys, a former rector who rendered metrical psalms into Welsh. Other features include carvings by Mary Oakeley, an organ fitted during the 1896 restoration, tubular bells, historic memorials and a pulpit carving of Saint Twrog. An ancient stone called Maen Twrog stands near the belfry entrance.
