About Church of St Mary and St Egryn

The Church of St Mary and St Egryn is a Church of England parish church in Llwyngwril, Gwynedd. Dedicated to Saint Mary and the Welsh saint Egryn, it remains in use within the Diocese of Bangor, with services held occasionally. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its exceptional historic and architectural interest.

The building dates mainly from the 14th century, with evidence of earlier origins. Local rubble was used to form its modest layout, comprising a short nave and chancel in one space, together with a southern porch, vestry and bellcote. Its outstanding feature is the richly carved rood screen, loft and access stair, decorated with floral forms, animals and patterned details. A tradition that the screen came from Cymer Abbey is not supported by evidence. The late-medieval lychgate has separate Grade II listed status.
