About St Caffo
St Caffo is an active parish church in Llangaffo, Gwynedd, around five miles south of Llangefni. Dedicated to a sixth-century Christian martyr associated with the locality, the church continues to serve a combined parish alongside three other churches. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, reflecting the architectural interest of its coherent nineteenth-century design.
Built in 1846 to replace Llangaffo’s medieval church, the present building was designed by Sheffield architects Weightman and Hadfield. Its Early English Gothic character includes pointed lancet windows, a narrower chancel and a western tower crowned by a conspicuous broach spire. The walls combine rubble stonework with limestone dressings, while slate covers the roof. Older features preserved inside include a decorated circular font from the twelfth century, a carved seventeenth-century pulpit and several early memorials. The churchyard contains part of a cross thought to date from the ninth or tenth century, together with early medieval gravestones.
