About St Brothen's Church
St Brothen’s Church stands on the outskirts of Llanfrothen in Gwynedd, Wales. This former Church of England place of worship is now redundant and cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches. It has Grade I listed status in recognition of its significant medieval character and surviving historic details.
Tradition associates the site with Saint Brothen, who is said to have established it during the late sixth century. The existing structure is largely from the thirteenth century and comprises a rectangular nave and chancel, built from local stone beneath slate roofing. Its fifteenth-century roof was followed by the probable addition of the southern porch and double bellcote during the seventeenth century. Restorations in 1844 and later that century introduced nave windows and red-and-black floor tiles. Notable furnishings include a fifteenth-century stone font, a simple seventeenth-century oak pulpit, a reading desk dated 1671, box pews and a late-medieval oak rood screen.
