About St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church stands in Llanfair yng Nghornwy, Gwynedd, in north-west Anglesey. It remains an active Church in Wales parish church and forms part of a group of nine churches. Its Grade I listing recognises the exceptional importance of its surviving medieval structure.

Although the foundation date is uncertain, the nave walls and chancel arch are believed to date from the eleventh or twelfth century. The chancel was enlarged and reconstructed during the fifteenth century, followed in the sixteenth century by a southern chapel linked to it through a three-arched arcade. A square western tower was added in the seventeenth century and now provides the entrance. The former south porch was closed and converted for use as a vestry in the nineteenth century. Restoration took place in 1847 and 1860, with further repairs to the chancel and chapel during the 1930s. Notable elements include the east window, memorials and churchyard lychgate.
