About Parish Church Of St Derfel
The Parish Church of St Derfel stands in Llandderfel, Gwynedd, and is dedicated to the Welsh saint Derfel. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of St Asaph, with services held occasionally. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, while its lychgate has Grade II status.
The present building dates mainly from the early 16th century, with much rebuilding undertaken in the early 17th century and a restoration completed in 1870. Its origins are associated with a religious community established before the Norman period. Built from local slate stone beneath a Welsh slate roof, it has a continuous nave and chancel, together with a porch, vestry and bellcote. The original Tudor roof survives. Inside is the Ceffyl Derfel, a rare medieval wooden figure believed to represent Saint Derfel’s horse or a stag. Its head was removed during the 18th century.
