About St Cybi's Church

St Cybi’s Church is a Church of England church on Stanley Street in Holyhead, Gwynedd. Located beside the remains of the Roman fort of Caer Gybi, it is protected as a Grade I listed building, a status granted in January 1968.

An earlier church was founded around AD 540 by St Cybi, who established a monastic community among the fort ruins. Viking raiders attacked it in the tenth century, and Henry IV’s forces caused further damage in 1405. The present medieval building developed from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, with the chancel among its earliest surviving sections. Cromwell’s soldiers damaged furnishings, sculpture, memorials, stained glass and the font during the 1650s, while also raising the tower for coastal observation. The Stanley Chapel, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, was added in 1897 and contains Hamo Thornycroft’s life-sized marble figure of William Owen Stanley. A Welsh-inscribed sundial is set on the south transept.
