About Eglwys y Bedd
Eglwys y Bedd is a medieval church in Holyhead, Gwynedd, situated at the south-west edge of St Cybi’s burial ground and inside the boundaries of a former Roman stronghold. Its Welsh name refers to a grave, linked by tradition to Seregri, a fifth-century Irish warrior said to have been buried here. The building is protected at Grade II and currently serves as a parish room for St Cybi’s.
Dating from 1301, the surviving portion formed the nave of a more extensive place of worship. Grey masonry supports a roof covered with slate, while architectural details include a medieval window in the western wall and a later entrance that has been sealed. Ornamented stonework frames the former opening into the chancel, and the northern wall contains a pair of square windows. The nave was repaired for Holyhead’s earliest school before 1748, the ruined chancel was demolished in 1810, and further conservation took place in 1980.
