About Church of St Beuno
The Church of St Beuno is a Church of England parish church in Clynnog Fawr, Gwynedd. It forms part of a local parish comprising six churches and adjoins a chapel also dedicated to St Beuno. Noted for the importance of its design and surviving furnishings, it is listed at Grade I. Beuno’s Well lies roughly 322 metres to the south-west.
The site has religious associations with Beuno, a Welsh abbot from the seventh century who established a monastic community here and was buried nearby. Earlier buildings were reportedly destroyed by Viking fire in 978 and later burned by the Normans. The chancel and transepts are the earliest parts of the present structure, dating to about 1480 and completed no later than 1486. A nave was added around 1500, followed by the north porch. The vestry, west tower and adjoining chapel are thought to be mainly from the early 1500s, while the connecting passage is probably seventeenth-century.
