About St Llibio's Church

St Llibio’s Church was a former place of worship at Llanllibio, near Bodedern in Gwynedd, Wales. It ceased to serve a congregation in the 1600s and was subsequently lost. Very little survives above ground today, although a commemorative slate identifies the site and remnants of the churchyard boundary have been recorded.

The foundation is attributed to Llibio, a sixth-century monk connected with Saint Cybi. It provided a subsidiary place of worship for Llantrisant church and served a small settlement whose inhabitants held land in return for labour. During the medieval era, disease, warfare, altered landholding and agricultural developments contributed to a steep fall in the local population. Following its closure, worshippers transferred to Llantrisant, while people living nearby were later recorded as attending St Edern’s in Bodedern. The structure was already derelict in 1776. A proposed nineteenth-century reconstruction was not undertaken, and a 1937 inspection reported that only the churchyard wall’s foundations remained visible.
