About Jerwsalem Chapel
Jerwsalem Chapel is an active place of worship in Bethesda, Gwynedd, rooted in the Welsh Calvinist Methodist tradition. Services are held daily in Welsh, and the church is protected at Grade I in recognition of its architectural importance.
The first chapel was erected in 1841–42 by T. Evans of Bangor at a cost of £3,400. Richard Davies carried out an extensive rebuilding between 1872 and 1875, costing £1,778. The large, almost square building has a two-storey stucco exterior, an Italianate palazzo design and a slate-covered roof. Inside, curved walls create a horseshoe-shaped auditorium beneath a domed ceiling, with seating for 980 worshippers. An organ acquired from Huddersfield Town Hall was added in 1903.
