About St Fflewin's Church
St Fflewin’s Church is a modest countryside place of worship at Amlwch in Gwynedd, Wales. Standing beside farmland in an elevated round enclosure, it continues to serve the Church in Wales as part of a five-church benefice. Its Grade II designation recognises its architectural and historic importance.
Christian tradition associates the location with St Fflewin, who is believed to have founded a religious community there around 630. Documentary evidence shows that a church occupied the site in 1254, although the current fabric is largely post-medieval and may rest on earlier foundations. Repairs took place in the early nineteenth century, followed by partial reconstruction in 1864 and restoration in the 1930s. The compact rectangular building has walls of rubble masonry, slate roofing and a small bell opening above the western gable. Inside are visible roof timbers, a nine-sided medieval font, eighteenth-century slate commemorative plaques and a piece of an inscribed medieval grave marker fitted into the sill of a window.
