About St Eleth's Church
St Eleth’s Church is an active parish church in Amlwch, Gwynedd, on the Isle of Anglesey. It belongs to the Church of England tradition and is one of four churches serving the parish. The Grade II* listed building is recognised for its architectural importance and the survival of much of its original Neo-classical character.
A church is believed to have occupied the site since the sixth century, when St Eleth, also known as Elaeth, reputedly founded a place of worship here. A larger church was needed after Amlwch expanded with the growth of copper mining, and the present building, designed by James Wyatt, was completed and consecrated in 1800. Built of local rubble stone with ashlar detailing and a slate roof, it has a western tower containing a clock and two bells dated 1687 and 1820. Victorian alterations introduced Gothic features, including nave arcades and window tracery. Further restoration in 1999 and 2000 added a west gallery, which houses the nineteenth-century Bevington organ.
