About Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Winefride
Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Winefride is a Roman Catholic parish church in Amlwch, Gwynedd. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary under her maritime title and to the Welsh saint Winefride, it belongs to the Diocese of Wrexham. The church remains in use following restoration and is protected as a Grade II* listed building for its exceptional inter-war design.
Giuseppe Rinvolucri designed the church, whose construction began in 1932 and was completed with its consecration in 1937. Reinforced concrete forms a distinctive hull-like structure inspired by Amlwch’s coastal associations. Six external parabolic ribs frame porthole-style openings, while star-shaped windows, coloured marble panels, mosaic work and a stone cross add further detail. Weather damage and decaying concrete led to closure in 2004, but extensive repairs allowed worship to resume in 2011. The porch also contains a burial slab from the later thirteenth century.
