About St Stephen's Church, Whelley

St Stephen’s Church, Whelley is an active Church of England parish church on Balcarres Avenue in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and shares a benefice with St John’s, New Springs. The church is recognised as a Grade II listed building.

Henry Paley of the Lancaster practice Austin and Paley designed the church, which stands on land donated by Lord Crawford. Construction began in 1928, with the eastern section, two nave bays and aisles consecrated in 1930. The remaining work was completed in 1937–38, when a choir vestry was also provided. Built from red and brown sandstone beneath green slate roofs, it follows a Free Perpendicular design. Features include a clerestoried nave, north and south aisles, an angled east end, a bellcote beside the chancel and a baptistry between substantial western buttresses. An electronic Johannus instrument replaced the 1964 pipe organ in 2011.
