About St Peter
St Peter is an active Church of England parish church on Peter Street in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and is protected as a Grade II heritage building. Since a parish reorganisation in 2019, it has formed part of the seven-church parish of Chapelfields.
Edward Graham Paley of Lancaster designed the church, which was constructed between 1863 and 1866. Rock-faced stone, smooth ashlar details and slate roofing define the exterior. Its five-bay nave is accompanied by aisles, a clerestory and chancel, while a broach spire rises above the north-east tower. Interior features include iron chandeliers, a carved circular font and stained glass from 1881 commemorating a nine-year-old child. An Edmund Schulze organ dating from 1873 survives but cannot now be played, and a digital instrument installed in 2004 is used instead. Eight bells were cast for the church in 1866 by Mears and Stainbank.
