About St Matthew's Church, Wigan
St Matthew’s Church stands on Billinge Road in Highfield, Pemberton, Wigan. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Liverpool and is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
The church was erected in 1892–94 to plans by the Lancaster architects Paley, Austin and Paley, with funding from Colonel Henry Blundell-Hollinshead-Blundell as a memorial to his wife, Beatrice. Built from red Runcorn sandstone beneath tiled roofs, it follows an Early English design with lancet windows, transepts and a crossing tower crowned by an octagonal spire. Austin and Paley lengthened the nave and southern aisle in 1909–10. Interior fittings designed by the architects include the font and pulpit, while Harry Paley’s stone reredos was added in 1917 to commemorate Colonel Blundell. Hardmans supplied stained glass during the 1910s and 1920s, and three later windows by Harold Harvey date from 1976 to 1992.
