About St Mary's Church, Wigan
St Mary’s Church, Wigan is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Standishgate in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It serves within Liverpool’s archdiocese and is designated Grade II*. St John’s Catholic Church stands less than 200 feet away, and the two congregations have sometimes cooperated, including several years as one parish. Since pastoral arrangements changed in 2017, St Mary’s has operated separately again.
The foundation ceremony took place on 17 March 1818, with the completed church opening on 27 January 1819. Rising Catholic numbers prompted an enlargement, formally brought into use in October 1851. A Lady Chapel followed a fortnight afterwards. Later improvements included work to reconstruct the organ in 1861 and the addition of replacement seating in 1867. The church entered the newly restored Catholic diocesan structure in 1850 and thereafter came under Liverpool.
