About St Mary's Church, Lower Ince
St Mary’s Church, Lower Ince is an active Church of England parish church on Warrington Road in Lower Ince, Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and sits within Wigan Deanery and Warrington Archdeaconry.
The present church occupies a former school dating from the 1870s. It replaced an 1887 red-brick church by the Lancaster architectural practice Paley, Austin and Paley, funded in part by two local industrialists. That building had narrow side aisles, an eastern bellcote and a slender spirelet. Constructed above coal workings, it was damaged by ground subsidence and demolished in 1978. Stained glass made around 1889 and in 1923 was salvaged and installed in the current building.
