About St Luke's Church, Orrell
St Luke’s Church, Orrell is an active Church of England parish church on Lodge Road in Orrell, Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and falls within the Archdeaconry of Warrington and Wigan deanery.
Henry Paley, of the Lancaster architectural practice Austin and Paley, designed the church principally in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Three bays at the western end were constructed in 1926–27, while the rest of the building was completed in 1939. A proposed tower at the south-west corner was never added. Architectural details include a many-sided eastern apse and internal arcades supported by eight-sided piers. A low screen beneath the chancel arch incorporates the pulpit, while the architects also designed the sedilia, furnishings and octagonal font. The churchyard holds Second World War graves for one soldier and three airmen.
