About St John the Evangelist's Church, Abram
St John the Evangelist's Church, Abram is situated beside Warrington Road in Abram, part of Wigan in Greater Manchester. It continues to serve the local Church of England parish and is administered through Wigan deanery, Warrington archdeaconry and Liverpool diocese.
The current building was erected between 1935 and 1937 after ground movement caused by mining left its 1838 predecessor badly damaged. Henry Paley, an architect with the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley, prepared the design, which was executed in Darley Dale stone and accommodated 478 worshippers. A broad, modestly proportioned tower at the western end carries a saddleback-style roof and a clock financed by donations commemorating George V’s Silver Jubilee. Items retained from the former building include the coloured glass in the western window, two internal memorials and a Richardson and Sons pipe organ with two manuals. The burial ground holds graves of military personnel from both world wars.
