About St John's Church, Wigan
St John's Church, Wigan is an active Roman Catholic church on Standishgate, Wigan, in Greater Manchester. It belongs to St William’s parish and holds Grade II* listed status. St Mary’s, another Catholic church nearby, was completed in the same year following competition between the Jesuit mission associated with St John’s and the diocesan clergy responsible for its neighbour.
A larger building became necessary as Wigan’s Catholic community expanded beyond the capacity of an earlier Jesuit chapel. Work began with the laying of the foundation stone in January 1818, and the completed church welcomed worshippers in June 1819. Costing £9,000, it provided space for approximately 1,000 people and included an organ gallery. The building measured 120 feet in length, with a width and height of 50 feet. Joseph John Scoles designed its sanctuary. Further decoration was undertaken inside in 1849, while responsibility passed from the Jesuits to Liverpool’s archdiocese in 1933.
