About St James' Church, Poolstock

St James' Church, Poolstock, is an active Church of England parish church in the Poolstock area of Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

The foundation stone was placed in September 1863, and the church was consecrated three years later in September 1866. Designed by Edward Graham Paley, it was funded by local colliery owner and Wigan MP Nathaniel Eckersley as the focal point of an industrial community. Built from Lancashire sandstone with slate roofs, the Decorated Gothic building has a five-bay nave, aisles, chancel and substantial west tower. Interior details include marble shafts beside the clerestory windows, an elaborate stone reredos and stained glass by Hardman. Its organ was made by Hill and Son in 1865–66, while eight bells were cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1896. Furnishings from the former St Thomas’ Church were moved into the south chapel after the parishes joined in 1970.
