About St Catharine's Church, Scholes
St Catharine’s Church, Scholes stands on Lorne Street in the Scholes district of Wigan, Greater Manchester. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Liverpool, with a benefice shared with Christ Church in Ince-in-Makerfield. The building has held Grade II status since 1983.
Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster designed the church, which was constructed between 1839 and 1841 with financial support from the Church Building Commission. Built using Billinge sandstone and roofed in slate, it follows an Early English Gothic design. Its layout includes a nave of six bays, aisles, a compact chancel and a western tower crowned by an octagonal belfry and spire. Mining-related ground movement later caused the western section to shift and the spire to distort. After receiving heritage funding in 2012, the spire was taken down, strengthened and rebuilt. Inside, surviving features include three-sided galleries on iron columns, box pews and an organ in the western gallery.
